Frank Stronach To Be Honored
Frank Stronach, whose Stronach Group operates Santa Anita Park, Gulfstream Park, Golden Gate Fields, Lone Star Park and the Maryland Jockey Club tracks at Laurel Park and Pimlico; will receive an Eclipse Award of Merit at the awards banquet on Jan. 25.
Stronach will be honored for his success in Thoroughbred breeding, racing, track ownership and for his support of programs for retired race horses.
Stronach, a native of Austria who built his fortune in auto components, entered the sport of Thoroughbred racing in 1962. Seven years later he established Adena Springs at Versailles, Ky. as his breeding and racing base.
Working with his daughter Belinda, who serves as chairman and president of the Stronach Group, they carded the first running of the $12 million Pegaus Cup at Gulfstream in 2017.
The second running is scheduled for Jan. 27 with a purse of $16 million.
Gonzalez-Toledo Top Laurel Park Fall Meeting
Claudio Gonzalez and Jevian Toledo have been named to trainer and top rider for the recently concluded Laurel Park fall meeting and for the track's annual championship.
Gonzalez won the fall training title with 33 wins and purse earnings of $1.02 million during the Sept. 8 to Dec. 30 meeting.
He took the annual trophy with 84 wins on the way to dethroning Kieron Magee, the winner of Maryland's last three annual awards.
Toledo won the fall riding title with 61 wins from 349 starts and $1.8 million in purse earnings.
His 144 wins lead mall Maryland riders in 2017.
Parx Is ON Sirius
Sirius XM Radio is now airing a segment on Parx Racing on Sirius Channel 93 and XM Radio 93.
The segment will be part of the satellite systems' “Down the Stretch” program that airs Saturdays from 10 AM to 1 PM (Eastern). The Parx segment is expected to be heard at approximately 11 AM.
Vince Reed Passes Away
Vince Reed, a fixture on the Bucks County, Pa. sports scene and the paddock host at Parx Racing, passed away recently.
Reed, whose real name was Anthony Iacovelli, went to work as a mutuel clerk at the South Philadelphia Turf Club in 1992 while he was broadcasting at WBCB radio station in Levittown, Pa.
Reed went on to host Philadelphia Park Live and the Phonebet account show. He also appeared in the TRN Racing Network.
He is survived by Barbara, his wife of 47 years, two sons, a daughter and their families.
