The Garden State Combined Driving Event

STONE TAVERN, N.J. — The sport of combined driving will take over the Horse Park of New Jersey, Oct. 12 to 14.

All three days are open to spectators but the highlight is marathon day on Saturday, Oct. 13, from 9:30 a.m. to about 2 p.m.

Tailgating spaces are available for $50 each with funds benefiting the Horse Park of New Jersey.

Combined driving is a three-phase sport.

The first phase is dressage. Horses put to gleaming carriages with skilled drivers formally dressed perform a set pattern of the “test.” The test displays the horse’s natural movement and training as well as the driver’s skill in balancing brilliance and steadiness. These are the building blocks that make the precision of obstacles and excitement of cross country driving possible.

In the cones phase, precision is the key, as drivers wind through a course of tightly spaced cones — each with a ball precariously balanced on top — trying for the elusive ‘clear’ round. It’s not an easy task with just inches to spare between the cones and wheels and an aggressive time to meet. Touch the cone and the ball falls, earning penalties that can lose the competition.

The marathon phase combines agility and endurance. Drivers will need all their skill to guide their horses through the tough cross-country obstacles in the best possible time while avoiding costly course penalties. The course takes drivers over hills, through woods and fields and the water hazard.

The water hazard is a favorite for spectators. The tailgate spots will provide an up close view as the horses and carriages splash through.

To reserve a tailgate space call Judy Canavan at 610-689-0200.

On Sunday, Oct. 14, veterinarians from Foundation Equine Wellness And Performance will present an equine education day. RSVPs appreciated but not required.
