Charles T. Colgan, retired executive vice president of the National Steeplechase Association, died Jan. 2, 2018, after a brief illness.

Born in 1940, Colgan grew up in the famed Hell's Kitchen neighborhood in New York City while becoming an avid sports fan.

Because he was the son of a member of the Treasurers ad Ticket Sellers Union, he had access to a host of New York sports and theater events.

While working as a White Cap at Belmont Park, he met and married Audrey Walsh who was working as an exercise rider for her father, Hall of Fame trainer Michael (Mickey) Walsh.

Together they raised three children during their 54 years of marriage. Their daughter, Kelly Colgan, and her husband, Peter McDermott, continue as professional horse trainers.

After graduating from St. Bonaventure University in 1962, Colgan served as a captain in the Army. He earned a degree from UNC Chapel Hill Law School in 1969 and went on to practice in Charlotte.

He found a way to unite his love of sports with his professional life when he joined the National Steeplechase and Hunts Association in 1971. Five years later. Colgan became executive secretary and racing secretary/handicapper of the organization.

During his tenure, he organized the move from New York to the present headquarters of the NSA at Fair Hill, Md.

Colgan greatly admired the work of several leading sports writers and broadcasters. He put his learning from them to work as the editor of American Steeplechasing.

Funeral services were on Monday, Jan. 8 at St. John the Baptist Church in Newark, Del.
