WACO, Texas — Two local riders made the 2018 Ariat All-America Team as determined by the National Collegiate Equestrian Association (NCEA).
Alex Desiderio, of Chester, N.J. who rides for Texas A&M and Lauren Fabiano, of Malvern, Pa. who rides for South Carolina have both been consistent performers for their team. The were both named to the second team in equitation over fences.
Desiderio holds a 12-4-1 record with two Most Outstanding Performer (MOP) awards. The senior went a perfect 2-0 at the SEC Championship, and posted three wins in SEC action during the regular season.
Fabiano is 7-4 this season in equitation over fences, including a 4-1 SEC regular-season record. The senior earned four MOP awards this season, tied for the Carolina team lead.
Fabiano earned SEC Rider of the Month honors in November after going 2-0 in jumping for the month. In her senior season, Fabiano took fences MOP laurels Oct. 13 at South Dakota State, Oct. 27 against Oklahoma State, Nov. 17 against Auburn and Feb. 24, also against Auburn.
Fabiano’s All-America nod is especially impressive considering she had never competed for the Gamecocks in equitation over fences prior to the 2017-18 season. She does own eight career victories in equitation on the flat, including three MOP awards.
Fabiano is a three-time SEC Honor Roll and NCEA All-Academic Team selection. She is Carolina’s 40th NCEA All-America selection since the award was created in 2011, and she’s the 14th Gamecock to win the honor in equitation over fences.
The top-four riders per discipline were selected and named Ariat First-Team All-America by the NCEA Selection Committee. The next four riders per discipline were named Ariat Second-Team All-America, while the Ariat Honorable Mention All-Americans were selected via the established criteria below. There shall be no limit on how many riders receive this award, provided they meet the following criteria:
Must have a 67 percent or higher winning percentage, excluding ties
Compete in a minimum of five competitions in the NCEA format
Have at least an adjusted NRS score of: 85 for flat; 90 for fences; 77 for reining; 80 for horsemanship.
The 2018 NCEA National Championship will take place April 18-21, 2018 at the Extraco Events Center in Waco, Texas. It marks the 12th consecutive year that the City of Waco and McLennan Country have hosted the national championship.
