HOLLAND TWP., N.J. — Emma Scheier, 13, of Holland Township earned several awards in the Jockey Club Thoroughbred Incentive Program (T.I.P.), which encourages the retraining of Thoroughbreds into other disciplines upon completion of careers in racing or breeding.

Her horse’s registered name is Open Now, but Scheier shows him as “And Then The Stars Aligned.” Around the barn, the 17-year-old is known as Chance. The Pennsylvania-bred gelding made 17 starts on the track and won one race, with one second and one third earning about $10,000. He last raced in 2005. His career with Scheier has been much more succesful.

Scheier, an eighth grader who attends South Hunterdon High School, boards Chance and trains at Van Dolah Stables in Stockton, N.J. with Sarah Davis.

She only acquired Chance in May, 2018 and the TIP Performance Championships year began the December before. Scheier was third in the country for Equitation, Reserve Champion of the East Coast and Reserve Champion of juniors nationwide. In other Performance (in hand and fun classes) she and Chance placed sixth in the country and Reserve Champion of the East Coast.

The pair also collected year-end championships in the Beginner Rider Equitation and Beginner Hunter divisions in both the New Jersey Horse Show Association and the New Jersey Professional Horsemen’s Association.

To add to her accolades, when the United States Hunter Jumper Association released their year-end awards list, Scheier and Chance were fifth in USHJA Outreach Hunters. That is nationawide and among all breeds of horses.

The TIP performance awards recognize Thoroughbreds accumulating the most points at all horse shows in each of the award categories and divisions throughout the year nationwide.

Other local award winners were:

  • Tammy Lynn Shaw, of Pennsylvania, on Watta Secret, shown as Too Da Loo, sixth place in Equitation.
  • Funny Bunny, shown by B Marcella Gruchalak, of Pennsylvania, fifth place in Western.
  • Thoroughbred Charities of America Green OTTB II (Last Raced 2017) — Theopieofmyeye, owned by Carly Starkey, New York.
  • Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Adoptee Awards — Tie for fourth place, Sunny Aftermoon, shown as My Cousin Vinny by Jessica A Barreto, of New Jersey and adopted through Rerun Thoroughbred Adoption.

“We received applications representing 560 Thoroughbreds competing in more than 11,500 classes and divisions during the 2018 award year,” said Kristin Leshney, senior counsel for The Jockey Club and the administrator of T.I.P. ”Winners will receive ribbons, prize money, and a variety of prizes, including custom Horseware coolers, stall bags, duffle bags, and jackets.”

Performance awards will be available once again in 2019 and will be based on results in shows from Dec. 1, 2018, through Nov. 30, 2019. The deadline for submissions is Dec. 20. Updated forms are available at https://tjctip.com/About/TBPAF.

New for 2019, performance awards will be offered for Endurance and Obstacle Mileage.
