New Jersey Date Night is a series on NJ Flavor by relationship writer Craig Rogers.

As summer slowly makes its way to the finish line and the crazy year we’ve experienced creeps to the end even slower, most New Jerseyans are ready for a drink ... or perhaps a flight?

The Garden State has several cool establishments that offer samplings of a variety of alcoholic beverages.  Whether your poison is tequila, bourbon or beer, a sip of something new and interesting is a great shot in the arm to share with your love.

The Road to Bountiful

When the highway takes you straight to Whiskey Roads in Little Ferry, you’ll find yourselves in a most happy place. They’re known for their signature flight presentations on carved wood, with choices ranging from a variety of local and international beers and whiskeys.

Their menu of pub food isn’t to be missed, including light bites like quesadillas, cheddar poppers and fried pickles. For something a little more substantial, check out the sweet Thai chili wings and the whiskey burger, a classic cheeseburger with Applewood bacon, mozzarella, jalapeños and their homemade whiskey sauce.

Friday Night Flights

Stewed Cow in Hoboken is a great place to be on a Friday night, especially if you and your date want take in a little education. The “bourbon for beginners” flight is great for newbies as well as seasoned whiskey drinkers, as it includes four bourbons ranging from 86 proof to 100 proof. The “Kentucky Klassics” is another great choice with favorites including Blanton’s Bourbon (93 proof) and E.H. Taylor Single Barrel (100 proof).

If your date prefers beer, wine or vodka they’re totally in luck!  Vodka flights are a tasting of four 80 proof flavors from Deep Eddy. Wine and beer flights are seasonal and interesting, too.

Be sure to grab a bite while you’re there because their tacos are out of this world! The shrimp and garlic tacos with mango relish are excellent, as are the flank steak tacos and the octopus tacos.

Hot Off the Press

They say that when you see it in ink it must be true, but when you drink it in Inc you’ll know without doubt it’s the real deal.

Located in New Brunswick, Inc is known for both great food and expertly created whiskey flights that both educate and inspire the drinker.  One flight in particular is the “License to Willet,” featuring three small-batch whiskeys ranging from 94 to 114.3 proof.  Another is the “I Think I’m Drinking Japanese” flight, featuring Japanese malt and grain whiskeys ranging from 80 to 90 proof.

You and your date will want to arrive hungry as well as thirsty because their menu is fantastic. Small bites include bahn mi steamed buns (Berkshire pork belly with jalapeño, pickled carrot, cucumber, mint and hoisin) and crispy buffalo cauliflower. And who can resist pimento cheese dip?

Giving it Your Best Shot

Those in the know will be quick to tell you that successful relationships are a little like a fifth of bourbon and a bottle of champagne. Thinking that relationships are a constant stream of bubbly goodness is unrealistic because regardless of our desire, the bubbles sometimes burst. Sometimes even the flow of champagne comes to an abrupt stop, making the experienced relationship-tenders realize that it takes work if you want that bubbly goodness to re-emerge and prevail.

Giving your relationship every best shot you can is what’s necessary to regain the gush when the situation is more like a dribble. A couple giving it their best shots is necessary to secure their relationship is an unlimited stream of superbly aged happy. Rich and smokey is the goal in both bourbon and relationships. Giving your relationship your best shot will yield a pleasant oaky flavor guaranteed to make your hearts take flight.
