NEW JERSEY — Food & Wine magazine made waves this week when it declared New Jersey the No. 1 pizza state in America and proclaimed that New York is No. 3. In the No. 2 spot? Connecticut.

New Yorkers were incredulous.

“This week, New Yorkers — who pride themselves on slinging the finest slices — found themselves dethroned and defeated in a shocking new ranking that gave its pizza a mere bronze medal,” wrote the New York Post.

(Adding insult to injury, the Food & Wine article’s author, David Landsel, writes that he’s a native New Yorker.)

But New Jersey’s “best pizza state” status comes as no surprise to those who live here.

In 2020, after New Jersey’s official state Twitter account, @NJGov, set off a “pizza war” by proclaiming the Garden State the “official pizza capital of the world,” we asked experts and pizza lovers why New Jersey deserved the title.

The bottom line: New Jersey has a history as home to many diverse types of pizza — from the Trenton tomato pie to brick oven to Sicilian style — and to this day is home to lots of high-quality independently owned shops.

“New Jersey is the best place to eat pizza in the country right now,” Landsel writes in Food & Wine. “The state is one in an elite group remaining true to their heritage, through long periods of time when others were too busy crashing ahead into the future to care about theirs.”
