NUTLEY, NJ - Members of the Nutley Volunteer Emergency and Rescue Squad had no time to celebrate the outpouring of support for the township's first responders today - shortly after the Saturday parade and rally, they responded to a call on Franklin Ave.

With temperatures hovering in the high 80s, and radiant heat coming off the pavement, it comes as no surprise that the heat took its toll on Nutley residents. Most people at the parade and rally perspiring so much, many looked as if they were caught in a lawn sprinkler.

Shortly after 2 p.m. on Aug. 1, the rescue squad answered a call about a woman on the pavement. A woman making her way to ShopRite was overcome by the heat and, according to a witness on the scene, "passed out."

The woman fell forward, with her feet still on the sidewalk, and her body in the crosswalk on Warren St. The witness stated that she is lucky that she was crossing with the light, so no cars were entering that area at the time she fell.

Another witness on the scene reported that the first to respond was NVERS Assistant Chief in one of the Command vehicles. The command vehicles were purchased as a part of the COVID-19 response. He began to triage the patient when an ambulance arrived with two additional crew members. The NVERS team learned that the woman just had blood work done.

It is believed the combination of just having blood work done, and heat, led to the incident. The patient was transported the Emergency Room at Clara Maass Medical Center in Belleville for further evaluation, and possible treatment. .

Given patient privacy laws, no further information is available about the patient.
