UNIOIN, NJ – Union firefighters responded to a late-night two-alarm fire on Sunday on Russell Street.

Firefighters arrived on the scene at about 10:30 p.m. and found heavy smoke and fire coming from the first floor, extending to the second floor.

Union Fire Chief Michael Scanio said because of the well-advanced fire conditions upon arrival and despite a very aggressive interior attack on the fire, the home sustained major damage.

Scanio said the fire was brought under control in about 90 minutes.  Maplewood, Kenilworth and Roselle Park firefighters assisted at the scene and additional mutual aid covered Union during the fire.

The fire does not appear suspicious at this time, said Scanio.  There were no reported injuries to firefighters or civilians.
