CORAL SPRINGS, FL – The bicyclist hit by a car on Saturday evening in Coral Springs has died, police said Sunday.
The 54-year-old woman died at Broward Health North after she got into a crash with a car at Coral Ridge Drive and Lakeview Drive shortly before 8:30 pm.
Police did not release her name on Sunday.
They also didn’t provide any new information on what caused the crash, saying it is under investigation.
The death comes as new bike lanes are planned all over Coral Springs, including Coral Ridge Drive.
There were 125 bicyclists involved in fatal crashes in Florida in 2017, according to an article in the Orlando Weekly, which cited data from the National Highway Traffic Administration.
As Florida’s population has increased, deaths among Florida bicyclists age 20 and older have tripled since 1975, the article said.
In addition, the article said a survey by AAA found that among Florida bicyclists, 36 percent don't wear a helmet while riding their bike.
The survey also determined that 57 percent of bicyclists rode with traffic, while 21 percent rode against it, indicating a general misunderstanding of traffic laws.
