SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ -- Scotch Plains and Fanwood police reported record turnout for the second week of the Cops & Kids program at which local officers from both departments interest with middle school students in lightly competitive sports.

"Cops and Kids has really taken off," said Scotch Plains Sgt. Jerry Brown, who is well known in the schools after having served as a drug awareness instructor for 5th graders at the middle school level for a number of years with the DARE and LEAD programs. "Word had to have gotten out for the turnout to be this much higher this year. It's great."

Also among the participants with the 5th through 8th graders were Scotch Plains Police Chief Ted Conley, Fanwood Chief Richard Trigo and Scotch Plains Mayor Al Smith.
