Tony Torchia had a Perfect Hometown Funeral Send-Off

December 6, 2012 at 6:32 PM

WEST CALDWELL, NJ - On Tuesday, December 4th, the West Caldwell Volunteer Fire Department bid a final farewell to their friend and co-firefighter, Antonio "Tony" Torchia.

Tony Torchia, a West Caldwell resident, died at the age of 72 on Friday, Nov. 30, 2012.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday at St. Aloysius Church in Caldwell. Following the Liturgy, a procession led by a historic West Caldwell Fire Truck led the funeral line of fire engines and cars past Torchia’s home in West Caldwell and then past the Fire Department where the flag was lowered at half-staff.  From there the procession made its way over to Torchia’s final resting place, Restland Memorial Park, in East Hanover.

Tochia was a former Marine, and for 39 years, he volunteered with the West Caldwell Volunteer Fire Department where he eventually achieved the rank of Captain.

Garrett Jones, Manager of Caldwell's Dancy Funeral Home, directed the funeral procession and also rode along on the 1928 American LaFrance Fire Truck.

“I grew up with Tony,  he was on the Fire Department with my Dad,” reflected Jones. “Everyone turned out and gave him a perfect ‘Hometown Funeral.’  Tony was well loved by everyone in the community, he was a great man, and he will be missed dearly.”

Born in Belleville, Tony Torchia lived in the city of East Orange before moving in 1972 to West Caldwell.  By profession, he was a lineman and then an installation technician with New Jersey Bell.  He served in the United States Marines from 1959 until 1963.

Tony Torchia is survived by his wife Rose Ann Farace Torchia, his sons, Michael and Anthony, his sister Rose Ann Torchia Alders, as well as five grandchildren.

The family has requested that donations be made, in Tony Torchia’s memory, to the New Jersey Alzheimer’s Association.

My Epic Beauty Fails

One day as I was looking around a high-end cosmetics store for a new lipstick, a “beauty expert” approached me and said that I was so stunning I should forget the lipstick, and get a lip plumper instead. At first I wondered why I needed a lip plumper if I was already so stunning. But then I thought, “Now here is someone wearing a badge that says, ‘beauty expert,’ so ...

Getting a Handle on Thanksgiving

This year, on our National Day of Thanks, I would like to express my gratitude for having hands.

We typically don’t thank our body parts because they seldom leave us.  Most of us have not experienced unfortunate accidents or suffered the horrible consequences of war; tragic events  which might cause us to lose a limb.

Most of us take our fingers and hands and elbows ...
