NUTLEY, NJ - Members of several Nutley congregations processed from their churches, with palms in hand, to the front lawn of Town Hall for a brief service of blessing of the palms.
The palm branch for Christians is a reminder of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem when the crowds waved palm branches of victory. A paper mache donkey was wheeled to town hall from Grace Church on Highfield Lane, "Behold our God who comes riding on an ass, the ruler who dares to be last rather than first," those gahtered read.
Prayers and Gospel readings continued in the service. Those assembled waved their palms during the blessing. The service ended with the hymn "All Glory, Laud, and Honor."
Palm Sunday marks the start Holy Week, culminatng in the celebration of Easter, when Christ rose from the dead.
On Friday, a group of congregations will gather in front of Nutley High School for the annual Cross Walk at noon.
