WESTFIELD, NJ — The boys varsity lacrosse team was into its second overtime in a tight game against Delbarton.
Sebastian Birse, an 18-year-old Westfield High School senior who plays long stick midfield, recalled that the team was nervous, but the coaches called for a time-out and told the team not to worry. It was advice that paid off for the Blue Devils who, with Birse’s defensive strength, bested Delbarton 5-4 recently. Birse is this week’s Ron Bansky and Associates Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week.
The season has wrapped for Birse and his teammates, who finished with an 11-5 record that included wins against Cranford, Passaic Tech and Hillsborough.
“The tough games we had we were there for it, and we won those that I think we should have won,” Birse said. “The effort all around this year was awesome.”
Birse has committed to play lacrosse at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst next year. He said that he committed early in his junior year, just before the pandemic hit.
“It was the right choice overall,” he said. “I like the coaches and met the team, and they seem very well put together. I’ve heard a lot of great things about the coaching staff at U-Mass.”
While Birse is keeping his options open when it comes to a choosing a major, the youth said his favorite subject at Westfield High School is science.
“I like how you have to figure out the problems as you go,” he said. “It’s not given a route.”
