ROXBURY, NJ - The Roxbury 10U baseball team hosted the Cal Ripken Northern N.J. District 7 Tournament July 25 -July 28 at Kiwanis Field in Succasunna. Teams from surrounding towns, including Montville, Denville, Wayne, Kinnelon and Long Valley, competed to receive the prestigious title of District 10u Champs.
For the second year in a row, Roxbury beat Montville in the semi-finals to advance to the finals. However, Kinnelon (5-0) beat Roxbury (4-2) by a score of 4-3 in a great finals game to finish out the tournament.
Roxbury took second place with the loss, but the players are excited to have the chance to return to the States for a second time. “Our players have lots to be proud of as, year after year, they get better and work harder to get closer to winning these titles,” said Coach Mike Paxos.
Paxos took the reins of the 10u team after the sudden passing in April of beloved former coach Steve Sanabria. The Roxbury Baseball Association has dedicated this year to Coach Steve as the players and coaches wear a customized patch of his number on the front of their uniforms.
This year’s returning players are AJ Montrose, Anthony Viscardi, Christos Paxos, Deacon Danna, TJ Hellner, Jaret Haupt, Nehemiah Machigua, Nicolas Olives, Robbie Geary, Ryan Parker and Sebastian Sanabria.
During the tournament, coronavirus safety guidelines were followed as each team had to submit their Cal Ripken and Roxbury Recreation waivers prior to the start of play. Before each game, teams filled out health questionnaires and took their players' and coaches' temperatures. Hand sanitizer, along with signage reminding people to wear masks and practice social distancing, were on hand at Kiwanis Field.
