ASBURY PARK, NJ -- TAPintoTV spoke with TJ Hoffmann, Producer of “Roadie: My Documentary,” which won “Best Home Grown Documentary Feature” at the 2019 Garden State Film Festival. The film looks back at Hoffmann’s 20 year career as a roadie, and incorporates his personal video archives starting with his tours in the 80s. “My film gives everyone a little peek behind the curtain,” he said.

The Home Grown category of awards at the Garden State Film Festival acknowledge films shot in the state of New Jersey, and Hoffmann himself grew up in South Brunswick. Hoffmann’s career as a roadie began in the late 80s with “big hair bands,” and he eventually toured with name acts like Skid Row and KISS.

“I have archival footage from my first tour in ‘91 in Europe,” said Hoffmann. “I had so much stuff that I wanted to make a little story out of it,” he explained. “Because of my footage and my connections in the industry, I decided to turn the whole thing into a documentary.”

The film, which was shot in several countries over the course of ten years, features Hoffmann’s own footage and also includes interviews with some of the top roadies in the business who have toured with acts like Madonna, Guns-N-Roses, Elton John, Van Halen, Fleetwood Mac and The Eagles.

“It’s living on a bus, it’s sleeping while moving, it’s loading in and out of a tractor trailer--maybe a hotel, maybe a shower, maybe a warm meal--and then the show, and then you do it all over again,” said Hoffmann.
