BLOOMFIELD, NJ -- Mac-Adley Hyppolite, Jr., better known as “Mac,” took off on May 1st for a cross-country biking journey to raise funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Bloomfield residents and supporters gathered in Watsessing Park to give him a warm send-off, and the Bloomfield police force provided an official escort as he biked off on his way out of his hometown towards his final destination of San Francisco.

Mac started biking a few years ago, after the death of his brother in 2012. He bought a bike for both his brother’s son and for himself so they could ride together. Riding a bike “took me right back to my childhood,” Mac said. The two started exploring nearby towns on their bikes and just started going further and further.

He’s completed fundraising tours before, and last year made it from New Jersey to Florida, but this year, he’s stepping things up on this cross-country journey. His efforts have even garnered the attention of New Jersey Senator Cory Booker, who reached out to Mac with a personal video message to send encouragement for his trip.

Many people provide assistance to help Mac complete his goal, offering help from meals to hotel rooms. “This is bigger than me,” he said. “This is something for all of us where we could look back and say we did something positive together,” said Mac. “Everybody’s a part of the ride.”
