New York, NY -- Art world and music industry luminaries came together to celebrate photographer Carinthia West's "Hanging Out" exhibit at the SoHo Contemporary Art gallery recently.
Carinthia West is best known for capturing intimate behind-the-scenes images of rock royalty and Hollywood stars including Mick Jagger, Carly Simon, Helen Mirren, Ron Wood and many more.
"We have an incredible show...we're thrilled to death," said gallery owner, Rick Rounick. "You go to a rock concert, you can take photos of any of these guys--it's the intimate access that Carinthia has," he said. The SoHo Contemporary Art gallery features works by Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring and serves a vibrant group of supporters and collectors.
"A lot of the people she's taken pictures of are people that I know also," said photographer/author and designer, May Pang. "It's beautiful to see this work--I think it brings back a lot of memories and that's important."
Besides her work as a jewelry designer, author and photographer, Pang is well-known for her relationship with John Lennon and her marriage to music producer Tony Visconti.
"There are few signature pieces that really exemplify the artist and the subject matter like this work," added Mark Rothman of the nonprofit organization, Hearts for Emma. "I can't tell you how excited I am to be here this evening."
Aside from Carinthia West's candid portraits of many notable musicians, her photos of Pink Floyd's inflatable giant pig unmoored over London's Battersea Power Station are known worldwide.
The exhibit has attracted both young and old viewers, and West notes the importance of finding an audience of all ages. "I'm a firm believer that if the young like what I do, then it's worth carrying on," she said.
The "Hanging Out" exhibit captures the icons of a generation. Pang added, "At a time like this, in this era, we need something happy--and they make us happy, all these photos!"
