BARNEGAT, NJ — Barnegat Township is among the top 100 safest cities in New Jersey according to a new report just released by SafeWise, a home safety information website.

Barnegat captured the 58th position in 2021 SafeWise report on the safest cities in the Garden State. It is also the highest-ranking municipality on the list from Ocean County.

According to its website SafeWise uses a proprietary system in analyzing safety within communities, which includes using FBI crime statistics.  The 2021 report is based on a review of 2019 data.

Population plays a key factor in determining what cities are ranked by SafeWise. The list of New Jersey’s 565 municipalities was narrowed down to 244 for SafeWise’s analysis.

A review of communities that came in ahead of Barnegat shows that most have significantly lower populations and smaller land areas.  Many in the top 50 have less than 15,000 residents.

Six-figure median income levels dominated the top-ranking cities. According to census documentation, the median household income in Barnegat is $74,706, with an estimated 8.58% poverty rate.

Other Southern Ocean County municipalities appear on the safest cities list as follows: Lacey, 104, Stafford, 106, and Little Egg Harbor, 109. Ocean Township (Waretown), Tuckerton and communities on LBI were not included in this analysis.

“When we compare apples to apples here in Ocean County, I'm not at all surprised that we're the safest town on the list,” said Barnegat Police Chief Keith Germain.

“There's no doubt that the Neighborhood Policing model that we embraced last year is already paying dividends and having a positive impact on our ability to keep Barnegat one if the safest communities in Ocean County, Germain continued.
