OCEAN COUNTY, NJ - At today's press conference, Governor Phil Murphy said he's still not ready to open the state. However, some of the numbers suggest that social distancing has proven a useful tool. That said, 102,196 individuals have tested positive for the coronavirus statewide. This number represents 44% of the total number of people tested.

The encouraging news comes in the way of hospitalizations. As of yesterday, 6,847 patients were in New Jersey hospitals for COVID-19 related treatment. This number represents a 17% decline since the record high on April 14th. On that same date, ventilators use reached an all time high. Today, 1,487 individuals needed mechanical assistance with breathing. While that number is still high, it is a 12% decrease.

Of course, the best news of all is that 778 people were discharged from New Jersey hospitals within the last 24 hours. Some were able to go to their owns to further their recovery. Others were discharged to step-down facilities. Notably, there is no current definition for recovery in New Jersey or by the CDC.  A hospital discharge does not necessarily mean recovery.
