BARNEGAT, NJ - On Monday, the Barnegat Board of Education conducted another virtual meeting on the replacement of the HVAC system at the Brackman Middle School. Previously, the Board awarded a $1.7M contract to Framan Mechanical. The contract will now go to EACM Corporation for a total amount of over $1.8M.
“The lowest bidder on the last contract miscalculated the work in the bid,” said Michael Hickey, President of the Barnegat Board of Education. “They informed us that they were $125K off the mark.”
After Framan Mechanical recognized their error, they decided that they did not want to perform the work at the amount awarded to their contract. Hickey emphasized that the failing HVAC system needs replacement or will adversely affect student's learning environment once classes resume.
Board members went into executive session to discuss the contract and came back to approve the second lowest bid to EACM Corporation.
None of the current board members or school district administrators were involved in the selection of the current HVAC system at the middle school. It is over thirty years old and is reportedly failing at a rapid pace.
