BARNEGAT, NJ – Like every September, the school year begins with the opportunity to study novel and innovative ideas. Meanwhile, Barnegat students and parents will soon discover something else new to learn. Grading policies are changing for the 2019-2020 school year.

In a letter addressed to the Barnegat family, R. James Barbiere, Director of Curriculum & Instruction announced changes to assessments and grading polices used to track children’s academic progress.

According to Barbiere, the district hosted a series of Grading Workshops and listened to “feedback from parents, faculty, and other stakeholders” in conjunction with making the administrative decisions.

Interested parties can download the Assessment and Grading Manual for complete review.  Some of the highlights include the following:

  • District changed 7-point scale grades to 10-point scales. This means an A=100-90.
  • Failing grades are 64 or below.
  • Grades for MP1 and MP2 are floored at 50.
  • District is transitioning to 4.0 GPA from 4.87 GPA.

Elementary schools will also be graded on the same scale as secondary schools. Parents should review the Assessment and Grading Manual for other changes that impact younger students.

Second Chances/Mastery Based Learning

Barnegat’s new assessment and grading policies consider the fact that children learn at different rates.  Therefore, the district is “implementing a policy of retakes.” This affords students the opportunity to take a second chance for certain major assessments.

Barnegat High School students may not retake midterms or finals under this policy.

Prior to retaking any assessments, students must complete some form of remediation. The retake grade replaces the original assessment. All “second chances” are granted at the discretion of the teacher.

Both homework and class participation are integral parts of learning experiences. Parents should check the manual for a better understanding of district expectations.
