BARNEGAT, NJ - The mission statement of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) clearly focuses on the organization’s commitment to the nation both at home and abroad. In Barnegat, VFW Post 10092’s dedication to that pledge just earned them the 2018-2019 National Outstanding Community Service Award.
“As a Veteran’s Organization, it is important for us to be an active part of our community and surrounding areas,” shared James Spataro of VFW Post 10092. “We think it’s essential to lend our assistance to veterans, their families, and our schools.”
As a result of that dedication, Barnegat middle school and high school students have the opportunity to compete for two different scholarship awards. Patriot’s Pens is an essay contest based on a patriot theme. The Voices of Democracy scholarship is only open to high school students and is an audio-essay competition.
VFW Post 10092 also recognizes students within NJROTC and awards programs for Barnegat High School. Members also participate in the Christmas Camouflage program within the Barnegat grammar schools.
In 2018, the Barnegat Post expanded its community involvement to include Stafford Township grammar schools, as well as Southern Regional’s Middle School and High School. The VFW also participates in recognition of the NJROTC program at Southern Regional.
Dedication to tomorrow’s leaders is only one way that Barnegat VFW 10092 involves itself in community service. In 2017, the Post established Police, Fire and EMS Recognition Awards within the Township. A year later, the program expanded to include first responders within Stafford Township.
Veterans who have already served our country with dedication and devotion often do so with much personal cost. In Barnegat, VFW Post 10092 members have doubled their community projects since 2017 and continue to give back.
