WARETOWN, NJ - The Ocean Township Board of Education began its meeting yesterday by acknowledging some local students. Ten members of Girl Scout Cadette Troop 50323 were awarded certificates as further recognition of their Bronze Award achievement.

Unfortunately, some of the girls who earned the distinction were unable to make the meeting due to illness. Those in attendance took to the front of the room to explain the basis for their award. Troop Leader Stephanie Boyd accompanied them and guided the girls through their presentation.

Scout member Rebecca Mills shared the project that the troop took on that qualified them for the Bronze Award.  “Family Promise is an organization that helps homeless families,” she shared. “They help homeless families find a place to have a home at night.”

The troop took on tasks to contribute to a more conducive environment for families receiving help from Family Promise. They created a play area for the children, and also cleaned up the backyard where a number of branches covered the ground.

“We didn’t want anyone to trip on the sticks,” explained one of the troop members. “We also got a fence for them, because there’s an open area from the backyard to the main road. We didn’t want anyone to run into the street.”

Troop members also did some work on the inside of the premises. They turned an empty room into a playroom, starting with making curtains for the windows. The scouts set up a couch for some seating room. Additionally, the girls built a dollhouse and painted it.  A couple of the troop members put together a mosaic on the wall to add to décor.

Dr. Christopher Lommerin, Superintendent of Schools, commended the girls for giving of themselves to others. “It feels good, right?” he said to them as he congratulated them on their Bronze Award achievement.

“On behalf of our board, I know that your altruism will never be forgotten,” said Sue McDowell, who serves as the school board’s vice president. “Please continue to do what you do for yourselves and our community. It is greatly appreciated.”

Members of Girl Scout Troop 50323 honored at the meeting were: Ryle Biester, Lillian Boyd, Jordyn Glasser, Kayla Horvath, Keira Korkowski, Rebecca Mills, Gianna Morro, Gianna Pallotta, Amelia Roche, and Brielle Trad.
