BARNEGAT/WARETOWN, NJ - Residents in the Southern Ocean County area have a few choices when it comes to assessing big boom noises today. Complaints about fireworks have simmered down - so there's little chance they'll account for daytime noise. What are the alternatives?

Training exercises are in full blast at the Joint Base McGuire-Dix Lakehurst this week.  The sounds can send animals into a tizzy before their humans even hear them. Some families may worry that their houses seem to be shaking enough to lift them on a visit to the magical land of Oz.

Weather plays a role in today's forecast for reverberating booms. Temps should again exceed the high 90s and the thought of rain might seem to offer a bit of relief. At least one prominent weather service suggests a drop to the mid 70s by early evening. The sounds of silence will be interrupted as severe thunderstorms hit the area.

Fireworks, military exercises, thunderstorms - which will it be?
