Statistics: The Barnegat Police Department answered a total of 1907 calls for service during the month of February.  The Crime Reduction Unit made a total of eight arrests. The total value of narcotics seized in Barnegat amounted to $1660 last month.

Highlights of Service Calls

March 1 - At approximately 3:15 PM, the Barnegat Police Department received a report of a 36-year-old male experiencing a mental health crisis. Sergeant Cirulli of the Barnegat Police Department spoke with the subject for nearly an hour and a half.

Sergeant Cirulli convinced the male to meet with officers outside the residence at approximately 4:45 PM. The subject went peacefully with officers, who transported him to Southern Ocean Medical Center for an evaluation.

Subsequently, officers recovered a 380 semi-automatic handgun from the residence. The male was charged with a second-degree offense, according to the law pertaining to “certain persons not to have weapons.”

February – The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office related a press release last month about charges filed against Juan C. C. Piedrahita, 49, of Hollywood, Florida. The Barnegat Police Department is working with the Prosecutor’s office in the apprehension of the defendant. He is accused of theft by deception related to phone scam involving a senior resident.


January: The Barnegat Fire Department responded to 43 calls in January. Six of the calls were related to fires, while six involved rescues.

Six of the other service calls made were related to hazardous conditions, three service calls, and three good intent calls.

There were also 20 calls related to fire and carbon monoxide alarm calls during the month of January.

The most notable call for the Barnegat Fire Department concerned a horrendous accident that occurred on the Garden State Parkway near 67. The Barnegat team responded to assist with the entrapment that resulted in two fatalities.

Station 11 was dispatched to the scene at approximately 8:00 am. The call came in as a motor vehicle accident with multiple people entrapped in vehicles on fire.

The Barnegat Fire Department also provided mutual aid to Stafford for a heavy fire engulfing an entire house. Barnegat helped extinguish the fire.

February: The Barnegat Fire Department responded to 33 calls.  The actual fires included one house fire that started with a cooking incident. There was also vehicle and brush fires.

The Barnegat Fire Department conducted boat motor vehicle extractions, twelve hazardous conditions related to gas leaks and fuel Members of the local department respond to motor vehicle clean ups after accidents within the community.

During the month of February, the Barnegat Fire Department had four calls related to smoke and odor investigation.  There were twelve fire and carbon monoxide alarm calls during the month.
