LONG BEACH TOWNSHIP - Southern Ocean County has many solid basketball stars of yesteryear. Former Southern Regional, Pinelands Regional, Barnegat and Lacey high schools were represented in this season's crop of competitors. These athletes and many others participated in the Long Beach Island Men's Summer Basketball League.
The league consisted of six teams. The league championship took place on Thursday, August 29 where the Beach Haven team defeated Barnegat (who were sponsored by Fusaro's PIzza) by the score of 59-48.
Beach Haven was led to victory by former Southern Regional players Eric Sharkey with 19 points, Bruce Caporano with 15 and former Southern and Catholic University star Pat Maloney with 10.
The Barnegat team struggled hitting from the outside in the contest. These two teams have played each other extremely tough all season. Jordan Krzeczkowski, a former Lacey star led Fusaro's with 15 points. Former Barnegat High player Kyle Morris chipped in with 11 points in the loss.
The league was held on the beautiful outdoor courts at the Long Beach Township municipal complex on 68th and Long Beach Boulevard.
Mike Rao did a great job running the league and was there each night to oversee all the action. The league was started to give local guys and opportunity to stay competititve in a healthy way.
