SOUTH BRUNSWICK - The Southern Regional Boys Volleyball squad fell just short in their quest to win an overall state championship this season. The Rams suffered their only losses of the regular season against Fair Lawn. The Rams defeated them in the third contest.
But this fourth time around did not end in Southern's favor. Southern played a great team and the Southern players expressed their congratulations to Fair Lawn recognizing the power of their opponent.
The contest went three games. Southern took the first game 25-20 and Fair Lawn the final two by scores of 25-16 and 25-20.
The Rams have won ten straight South Jersey titles, but this year is the first time that Southern will not compete for the state title since 2008. Those facts prove that the Southern coaches, players and community have so much to be proud of.
It was a sentimental night for Coach Eric Maxwell. His son, Matt is one of the best players in New Jersey. Matt was named Shore Conference Player of the Year last week. Matt had 20 assists, three digs and two blocks. Matt is planning on following his cousin Liam Maxwell to Belmont Abbey College in North Carolina in the fall.
Junior Justin Kean, recorded 11 service points, eight kills, four assists, two blocks and two digs. Senior Zach Hem joined the team in the latter part of the season and played great. Hem recorded 10 kills, six service points and three digs. Jack Healy had four service points to go with two digs, two blocks and two assists.
