BERNARDS TWP., NJ _ Local kids can bring their bait and fishing poles and cast a line to try to hook the biggest fish at this Saturday's Annual Fishing Derby at Southard Park pond, hosted by the Bernards Township Parks & Recreation department.
The event is free for youth of all ages and their families. No advance registration is needed.
No license is needed either to fish at Southard Park at the Fishing Derby, scheduled for 9 to 10:30 a.m. this year on Saturday, April 13.
However, fishing at the pond is only allowed once a year without a license, when it is stocked for the derby with a variety of fish. At all other times, a license from NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife is required for those ages 16 to 69 who want to fish at the Southard Park pond. [Correction: An earlier version of this article said that fishing is only allowed during the annual Fishing Derby.]
Prizes will be given for the largest fish in several categories.
Southard Park is located at 67 N. Maple Ave., north of the Basking Ridge town center.
The derby is traditionally held at the end of the Bernards Township school district's spring break.
