BASKING RIDGE, NJ - The Ridge 11U baseball team lost a pair of hard-fought games in the first day of pool play in the 2018 Cal Ripken Middle Atlantic Region Tournament Tuesday at the Ridge Baseball Club Complex on Valley Road.

In the first game, the Red Devils fell behind Lakeview (N.Y.), 9-1, after two innings, but rallied to come within two runs before losing, 10-8. In the nightcap, Ridge came out on the short end of a pitcher's duel, 1-0, against Piedmont (Del.).

Sean Henry drove in four runs and Quinn Dashefsky paced a 15-hit attack with three hits for Ridge in the game against Lakeview. Henry and Nicky Sellitti each had two hits in that game, which saw Ridge score two runs in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth to throw a scare into Lakeview.

In Game 2, Sellitti pitched a complete-game three-hitter with no walks, but Ridge was unable to cash in on two early opportunities and the Red Devils also finished with only three hits in the 1-0 defeat. Matthew Bober and Matthew Martine each hit singles as Ridge mounted a threat in the first inning, but runners were stranded at first and third. Ridge hit several balls hard in the first four innings, including a one-out double in the third inning by Ben McCain, who was left at third base when the inning ended.

McCain, playing second base, also made a spectacular catch of a pop fly in shallow right field as he fell backward in the fourth inning. Dashefsky also made a strong defensive play fielding a bunt from his catching position.

Ridge now must gain at least a split in its final two pool play games in order to have a chance to qualify for the elimination round, which begins on Friday. The Red Devils play Flood City (Pa.) at 3 p.m. Wednesday, then North Colonie (N.Y.) at 12:30 p.m. Thursday.
