BAYONNE, NJ - One-run losses have meant the difference between a winning and a losing season for the Ridge baseball team this spring.

On Tuesday, the Red Devils took a three-run lead in the first inning, but ended up falling, 8-7, in eight innings to Bayonne in the opening round of the NJSIAA Section 2, Group 4 state tournament in Hudson County.

Anthony Roti and Jack Peacock singled in runs for Ridge (10-14) in the opening inning, when the Red Devils also scored on a wild pitch to take a 3-0 lead before Bayonne (18-10) came to bat. But the Bees answered with four runs of their own in the home half of the opening inning.

Ridge scored one run in the third and three in the fifth to take a 7-4 lead before Bayonne came back again, tying the game with three runs in the last of the fifth, then scoring the winning run in extra innings on an RBI double by Ryan Guthrie.

The decision marked the seventh time this season that Ridge has lost a game by one run.
