Bernards Township, NJ- Basking Ridge Business Alliance will host Karen Cilurso, Senior Regional Planner, Office of Smart Growth, Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission, as she presents “Revitalizing the Suburban Downtown,” Thursday, March 19 at Bernards Township Public Library, 6:00 p.m.  Cilurso is the author of the 2013 report Revitalizing Suburban Downtown Retail Districts: Strategies & Best Practices, which compiled information on 71 downtown retail districts in an effort to learn what elements were common among successful older suburban retail districts.

The report found that downtown retail districts are an integral part of any thriving community, and that people prefer to purchase goods and services from the closest location that offers what they need.  With proper planning, communities can turn their retail districts into vibrant and unique places for residents and visitors to experience.

The evening’s presentation will include:  1) important retail trends affecting downtown business today; 2) common elements that contribute to downtown retail success; 3) strategies for downtown business owners to be competitive, and 4) factors local government should consider in revitalization projects.
