BERNARDS TWP., NJ - Boy Scout Steven McInerney of Basking Ridge has fulfilled his Eagle Scout service project requirement with the construction and installation of an arbor at the Visiting Nurse Association of Somerset Hills headquarters off Mount Airy Road in Basking Ridge.
The arbor graces the entrance to the hospice garden at the VNA, a nonprofit home care agency that provides home health, hospice, adult day and community outreach services to the region.
McInerney is a member of Basking Ridge Troop 555, part of the Patriots’ Path Council.
McInerney said he developed an interest in the VNA of Somerset Hills through his grandmother, Barbara McInerney, a long-time volunteer and supporter of the organization and its Adult Day Center.
Following a discussion of project options with Marie Sperber, VNA Vice-President of Business Development & Philanthropy, an agreement was reached to replace the old and heavily damaged hospice garden arbor.
For McInerney, the leadership, communication and construction skills necessary to complete his project provided a valuable learning experience for which he said he is grateful.
“We are very appreciative that Steven chose the VNA of Somerset Hills as recipient of his service project,” Sperber said. “Throughout the process, we have been impressed by his planning and quality of work. It’s been a pleasure working together.”
Few Boy Scouts achieve the highest rank of Eagle Scout within the Boy Scouts of America organization. Along with years of service as a scout, an Eagle Scout can only receive that special designation after planning, developing and leading a service project.
The Visiting Nurse Association of Somerset Hills and its subsidiaries states its mission as providing individuals and families with comprehensive, cost-effective home and community healthcare services, regardless of ability to pay, using partnerships where appropriate. The VNA is a charitable, tax-exempt home health agency and hospice certified by Medicare, accredited by the Community Health Accreditation Program and licensed by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services.
