SUMMIT, NJ - Student / Partner Alliance (S/PA), the Summit-based non-profit organization with a mission of support inner-city high school students in New Jersey with private school tuition assistance and mentoring to increase their chances for college admission and scholarships, recently gathered more than 250 students and their family members, mentors and other supporters to celebrate 'National Mentoring Month'
Mentors from many towns in northern New Jersey, including Basking Ridge, Summit, Chatham, Montclair, Short Hills, Westfield, South Orange, Maplewood, Scotch Plains and more, partner with the S/PA in order to help low-income, inner-city students increase their chances for college admission and scholarships.
Investors Bank Foundation also honored
In recognition of their significant support for inner-city students, Investors Bank was given an award for Community Spirit at the gathering in January. Vice President and Senior Market Manager at Investors -- and S/PA mentor -- Omari Frazier accepted the award for Community Spirit. Investors employees and S/PA mentors Trellice Johnson, Assistant Vice President- HR Business Partner, and Martha Jaynes, Assistant Vice President and Cranford Branch Manager joined him.
S/PA President and Summit resident, Emmett Daly, made the presentation to Frazier, citing the Bank and Foundation’s longstanding and important support on so many levels, as well as Frazier’s personal commitment to his student mentee. Investors Bank has encouraged their employees to become involved in mentoring through Student / Partner Alliance.
This year’s annual celebration included guest speaker, Kimberly Ellison-Taylor, Global Accounting Strategy Director for Financial and Professional Services Industries at Oracle America.
Ellison-Taylor encouraged the students to think big and to bring with their “A” game to every thing they do, every single day. Citing her experiences growing up with many financial and cultural challenges in Baltimore, MD.
One of the mentors remarked as he was leaving that night, “Tonight’s presentation really got a conversation going with my freshman student. I was so happy that It opened up a new level of communication. He’s a great young man.”
