BASKING RIDGE, NJ -- Westfield held Ridge scoreless for the first half and held on for a 6-5 boys lacrosse victory in the semifinal round of the North Jersey, Group 4 tournament on Wednesday.
Westfield (11-8) held a 1-0 lead after one quarter, and took control of the first half by scoring two goals in the first 2:11 of the second quarter to extend to a 3-0 lead. The Blue Devils added another goal in the second quarter and went to halftime with a 4-0 lead.
After Westfield played a slowed-down possession game to maintain its lead in the opening half, Ridge (17-2) dominated play for most of the second half, eventually rallying to tie the game, 5-5.
Michael Zima finally got the Red Devils on the board with a goal in the third quarter to make the score 4-1. After three quarters, Westfield had a 5-3 lead. With seven minutes left, Sean Eversen scored to bring Ridge within one at 5-4. Nolan Haddad's goal moments later tied the game, 5-5, before Westfield scored the clincher with just under 5 minutes to go.
Chris Crapanzano scored two goals for Ridge and Haddad finished with three assists to go with his one goal. Connor Hackett made six saves in goal for the Red Devils.
