Brendan Tevlin Lacrosse Festival to be Played on New BPT Memorial Field

WEST ORANGE, NJ – The fourth annual Brendan Tevlin Lacrosse Festival will be the first to be held on the brand new Brendan Patrick Tevlin Memorial Field at Seton Hall Prep’s (SHP) Kelly Athletic Complex at 11 a.m. on Aug. 5, with a barbecue to be held at the Shillelagh Club immediately following the lacrosse games to continue the “good vibes.”

“Seeing the support year after year is great and truly uplifting,” said event co-founder Dave King, a West Orange resident. “It has been a great event for the past three years and were hoping the fourth is even better. We appreciate all the help we get from family, friends and others who are kind enough to volunteer. We’re excited to make this year’s festival fun and entertaining for everyone.”

The night before Brendan Tevlin was fatally shot on June 25, 2014, the then 19 year old suggested that his friends organize a pick-up lacrosse game during his summer home from college. Following his death, Tevlin’s friends and family organized the first Brendan Tevlin Lacrosse Festival to honor of the SHP Class of 2013 graduate’s memory and raise money for the recently unveiled BPT Memorial Field.

Fellow Class of 2013 graduates King, co-founder Rich Shahpazian and fundraising director and event coordinator Michael Condon describe Tevlin as an amazing son, brother, friend and person who had a positive impact on everyone he encountered. According to Condon, they hope to keep the tradition going because playing lacrosse with his friends every summer is something Tevlin would have loved to do.

“He was always able to draw a crowd and having this festival every year just reminds us of how many people he touched,” said Condon, a West Caldwell resident and Tevlin’s cousin. “It’s also a great way to reconnect with people from high school and old friends that you rarely get to see. The thing we’re most excited about is that it’s going to be the first year on the fully finished Brendan Tevlin field, so it’s a fulfilling feeling.”

In order to raise enough money to keep the tradition alive, Thatcher McGhee’s Fairfield hosted the annual “Bar Night for Brendan” on Wednesday. Friends, family and area residents came out to support the lacrosse festival by enjoying a meal or drink at Thatcher’s, which donated 20 percent of each check toward the Brendan Tevlin Larosse Festival.

"We're honored to be doing this for four years now and we couldn't do it without the mass amount of help we get from everyone,” said Shahpazian, a New Providence resident. “It also speaks to the person Brendan was and how many lives he touched over the years. We run the fest to continue his motto of ‘good vibes and easy living.’"

The festival is $25 to play or $10 to attend. Players should sign in beginning at 10:30 a.m.
