BERNARDS TWP., - A 22-year-old Elizabeth man is accused of forcibly taking a vehicle that his estranged girlfriend was operating in the area of Flintlock Court in Basking Ridge at about 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 1, township police said. He was later stopped on Route 78 East without incident, according to Bernards police.
Police said the woman, who was not from Basking Ridge, suffered a minor injury.
Bernards police, with the assistance of Berkeley Heights police, reportedly took the suspect into custody without incident after being stopped near mile marker 42.6 on Route 78 East, police said. A Bernards officer had observed the vehicle soon after it was reported stolen, and pursued it onto Route 78, police said.
Wesley D. Drew, 22, of Elizabeth, was then charged with simple assault and contempt of court and lodged at the Somerset County Jail, according to township police.
The man reportedly had a brief altercation with the woman before allegedly taking the vehicle, police said.
