BEDMINSTER NJ – President Trump will be in Bedminster this weekend from Friday through Sunday to use Trump National Golf Club.  The visit is expected to be the first of several presidential visits this summer to the “Northern White House.”  Federal reimbursement for Bedminster’s expenses may not be far behind the president's motorcade.

According to Roll Call, the House and Senate will act on omnibus spending legislation this week.  The legislation was approved in the early hours of Monday morning by committees of both houses.

The legislation comes as welcome news to Bedminster Mayor Steve Parker.  The cost to Bedminster of a single presidential visit is estimated to be $42,000, or one half of one percent of the Township’s annual budget.

“The Township Committee became concerned about the cost to Bedminster to protect the President after his November visit,” said Parker.

The presidential Transition Team used Trump National as its base of operations for a weekend shortly after Trump won the November election.  “The November visit cost the Township approximately $3,800,” continued Parker.  The Township was able to minimize costs in November because of the participation of the New Jersey State Police, and thanks to the yeoman’s work of Police Chief Karl Rock.

“Chief Rock kept overtime down in November by taking every possible shift and detail,” said Parker.

Not long after the November visit, the Township began to pursue federal re-imbursement for the Township’s costs.  The township sent a letter to the federal government seeking reimbursement.  The township worked closely with Congressman Lance’s office.

“Our focus was to go through the Congressman,” continued Parker.  “Our cost for the seven proposed visits for 2017 was estimated to be $300,000, which would put the Township over the two percent budget cap."

After Bedminster sent its request, Lance picked up the baton.  In addition to working with Lance’s office on the funding issue, the Township worked with Somerset County Prosecutor Michael Robertson to develop a security plan.”

“Congressman Lance has always been very helpful to Bedminster.  He came through for us and we appreciate it,” concluded Parker.

The full House and Senate will consider the budget bill sometime this week before it heads to the president’s desk for his final approval.
