UNION, NJ — The Ridge football team came away with a convincing 37-21 victory over Union on the road in a driving rain Friday night.
The Red Devils (2-1) took a 7-0 lead when junior quarterback Michael Olivo scrambled for the first of his four touchdowns to cap a 70-yard drive and Jake Beckman kicked the extra point.
A 5-yard TD pass from Olivo to Matthew Lusardi early in the second quarter extended Ridge's lead to 14-0. After a Union TD and a failed PAT, Ridge took an 11-point lead when Beckman kicked a 22-yard field goal just before the half.
The host Farmers closed to within 17-13 before Ridge scored on a 4-yard TD run by Olivo for a 23-13 lead. Olivo's third TD of the game was a 38-yard run with 8:09 left in the game. Less than three minutes later, the Ridge QB went in from the 4 with 5:26 left for a 37-13 lead.
The matchup was originally supposed to take place on Oct. 30, but was moved up by two weeks to fill a late vacancy both teams had on their schedules because each of their original opponents had to cancel due to COVID restrictions.
