SOMERVILLE, N.J. - A Staten Island resident and former sergeant with the New York Police Department has been convicted of 2nd degree possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose and disorderly persons criminal mischief following a three-week trial.

At the time of her arrested in 2014, Wanda Anthony. 47, was a sergeant with NYPD. She was later terminated by the department, according to Somerset County Prosecutor Michael H. Robertson.

The charges stem from an incident outside a home in Watchung April 30, 2014.  Sentencing is scheduled Dec. 1. Anthony faces up to 10 years in jail.

Robertson provided the following account:

Anthony was off-duty at the time and on a date with a resident of High Tor Drive in Watchung. Shortly after arriving at the residence at 3:30 a.m., there was a physical altercation between the resident's girlfriend and Anthony, who subsequently fired her NYPD-issued 9mm handgun into a car parked in the driveway, shattering the rear driver's side window.

Anthony left the residence, and was located nearby and arrested by Watchung Police Officer Brian McLaughlin.; she denied firing the weapon during an interview with Watchung police detectives.

A Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office forensics technician later recovered two projectile fragments from the resident’s vehicle, and a Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office ballistics expert matched the projectile fragments to Anthony’s handgun.
