BERNARDS TWP., NJ - It looks as if there will be no contest in this June's primary election for Republicans and Democratic candidates for two available spots on the Bernards Township Committee - but for the first time in years, there likely will be a full slate of candidates from both parties in the general election in November.

The four candidates who filed with the Bernards municipal clerk's office by the 4 p.m. deadline on Monday are:

Sarah "Sally" G. Booth of Bullion Road in Basking Ridge, and Joan B. Harris of Watchung Drive in Basking Ridge both filed to represent the Democratic party in this year's race for two three-year terms that will begin next January on the Township Committee.

Longtime incumbent John Carpenter of Berta Place in Basking Ridge, along with James K. Baldassare, Jr. of Queen Anne Drive in Basking Ridge, will be uncontested in seeking the GOP nomination for the two Township Committee seats.

Other Republican incumbent not seeking re-election

The Bernards Township Committee's five members are all Republican at this time. Along with Carpenter, the other Republican whose seat expires this year is Thomas Russo, Jr. However, Russo announced at the beginning of this year that he would not seek re-election following his first full term on the committee.

The primary election is June 6, 2017.

Independent candidates also could seek to be placed on the ballot.
