Giant VNA of Somerset Hills Rummage Sale Begins on Friday

FAR HILLS, NJ - Tens of thousands of items sold at the giant Visiting Nurse Association of Somerset Hills will be available to the public in 26 "departments" of bargain merchandise for this fall's VNA rummage sale, which is scheduled to be held Oct. 6, 7 and 8 at the Far Hills Fairgrounds off Route 202.

The sale, which dates back to the early 20th century, attracts thousands of shoppers from throughout New Jersey, as well as other states.

Attending the sale, and poking among the bargains and unusual finds such as original artwork and unique Halloween costumes, is also a traditional fun event for many rummage sale fans.

The parking lot on the first day of the sale is usually lined up with bargain hunters waiting for the first crack at finding adult and children’s clothing, appliances, antiques, artwork, pet supplies, electronics, lighting fixtures, cameras, fabric and sewing accessories, holiday decorations, sporting goods, furniture, jewelry, toys, books, decorative items, kitchen goods, and more.

Sale hours for October

This year's sale hours are scheduled for 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 6 and 7, and from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 8. The sale is rain or shine, with rare cancellations or delays.

VNA is based in Basking Ridge

The sale, which is staffed by hundreds of volunteers from nearby and throughout the region, is a fundraiser to help the Basking Ridge-based VNA provide home health and hospice care to families in need, along with other wellness services not covered by any insurance.

The wide range of items for sale were donated by members of the public from throughout the Somerset Hills, and beyond, and tested and sorted by volunteers.

The VNA accepts an extensive variety of donations that will be resold at the sale, including clothing for all ages - including high fashion - household and electrical appliances in working condition, and each year, some very unique donations.

Credit cards (MasterCard & Visa) are now accepted in every department. Food is available for purchase with cash.

Admission is free. Parking is limited, so carpooling is recommended. Handicap parking is available, according to the VNA.

The Far Hills Fairgrounds is located at the intersection of U.S. 202 & Peapack Road (County road 512 ) in Far Hills. The fairgrounds and sale is located a short walking distance from the NJ Transit's Far Hills station off Route 202.

The VNA of Somerset Hills is located on Mount Airy Road in Basking Ridge.

Proceeds from the twice-a-year rummage sale help the VNA give all families equal access to the agency’s full range of home health and hospice care services, regardless of their ability to pay. Funds raised also help provide all members of the community can benefit from important and innovative programs uncompensated by Medicare, Medicaid or private insurance.

"By helping the VNA make services like our Adult Day Center available to all those in need, your generosity will make a huge and heartfelt difference in the lives of patients, caregivers and families," according to the VNA. Many at the Adult Day Center suffer from Alzheimer's and dementia.
