EAST HANOVER, N.J.- On the eve of March 14, 2018, named National Walk Out Day, a day students take a stand and protest gun violence, a counter movement is gaining ground. #WalkUpNotOut is posting all over social media. Their message is;
Instead of walking out of school on March 14th, we are encouraging kids to walk up and start a conversation with someone new. Its time to #WalkUpNotOut
The hashtag has shown up on Instagram and Twitter as well, bearing calls to action for all students including, " walk up to the kid who sits alone at lunch, quietly in the corner and ask him to join you, smile and say hi, walk up to your teachers and thank them, walk up to someone who has different views than you and get to know them." The challenge is to find 14 students and three adults and say something nice in honor of those who died in the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
