BERNARDS TOWNSHIP, NJ — Liberty Corner School plans to reopen tomorrow, Wednesday, Dec. 2, following news that there was not a school-based transmission of the COVID-19 virus at the school.

On Tuesday, the Bernards Township school district posted a general notice to all families on its website at

“Last week we were very concerned that we had our first school-based transmission because a teacher and student from the same homeroom at Liberty Corner School both tested positive for Covid-19,” the letter said. “We have since learned that the teacher’s initial antigen test was a ‘false positive.’ Two subsequent PCR tests were both negative.”

Liberty Corner School was closed Wednesday, Nov. 25, while an investigation of the two positive cases was conducted. Instruction for all students was taking place virtually.

The Bernards Township Health Department has agreed the school can reopen.

“In light of these extremely unusual circumstances and short notice, we feel it best to reopen the school on Wednesday, Dec. 2. We ask all of our Liberty Corner staff and families to use tonight and tomorrow to plan accordingly,” the letter read.

The letter noted that separate communications will be made to individual families “whose children were errantly deemed a close contact as a result of this false positive test. We apologize for any inconvenience this case caused …”

The letter reminded parents and students to give careful attention to the daily screening form each morning before sending your child to school.

In a letter dated Nov. 29, the district said “instances of staff or students testing positive are accumulating and creating many close contacts that need to quarantine. As of now we have over 70 staff members and over 70 students who cannot come to school related to Covid exposure or illness.”

It reminded of recent COVID-19 related cases:

● Two students at Ridge High School have tested positive in unrelated cases. All close contacts have been identified and notified.

● An individual at Cedar Hill School has tested positive. All close contacts in this case have been identified and notified.
