SUMMIT,NJ - The Summit Police Department has announced the arrest of Louis A. Pietrantuono, age 26, of Gillette, in connection with the July 9 robbery of the Shell gas station located at 6 River Road in Summit.

The robbery occurred shortly before 11 p.m. on July 9 when a lone masked suspect, later identified as Louis A. Pietrantuono, jumped the station clerk from behind as he entered the cashier’s booth. The suspect repeatedly struck the clerk with a large wrench about his head and body. The suspect then dragged the clerk out of the booth and across the parking lot to the rear of the gas station where the clerk was left disoriented and bleeding. The suspect returned to the booth and stole approximately $680.00 before fleeing the scene on foot.

During the course of the investigation, which included the public release of security camera video on July 12, detectives identified Pietrantuono as the alleged suspect. Shortly after midnight on Saturday, July 29, Summit Police Detectives arrested Pietrantuono without incident at the home of one of his relatives in Summit. Pietrantuono was transported to the Union County Jail, where he is being held pending a bail hearing.

“This is an example of outstanding, dedicated and good old-fashioned police work by our Detective Bureau,” said Summit Police Chief Robert Weck. “With very little preliminary evidence, our detectives worked diligently day and night to follow every lead and build a case leading to the arrest of the suspect in this vicious attack and robbery. I could not be prouder of the effort undertaken by our detectives or of the outcome for the community.”

Weck added, “The skilled detective work undertaken in this case, and in every case pursued by the Detective Bureau, demonstrates our strong commitment to protecting and serving the citizens of Summit.
