Michael Shapiro, Publisher of TAPinto, to Speak on Hyperlocal Media at the Anne and Lee Hale Eighth Annual Speaker Series, October 7

Mike Shapiro, CEO and Publisher of TAPinto, will discuss “Hyperlocal Media---the Future of Local Journalism” in the next talk of the eighth annual Anne and Lee Hale Speaker Series.

The publisher of online newspapers will provide an inside look from his perspective as CEO and Publisher of TAPinto.net, a network of more than 40 independently owned and operated online local newspapers including one based in Westfield.

The talk is slated for Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 7 p.m. at Westfield Memorial Library, 550 East Broad St.  The Speaker Series is open to the public but pre-registration is required by calling 908-789-4090 extension 0 or by signing up online at www.wmlnj.org.   Hale speakers address the assemblage for approximately 45 minutes, followed by a 15-minute Q and A period.

Shapiro is an alumnus of Rutgers University and Stanford Law School. He practiced law in Manhattan before starting an online newspaper in 2008 in New Providence and also ones in Summit and Berkeley Heights. Since December 2013, he has been franchising sites to individuals who run papers in their respective towns.

Past president of the Rotary Club of Berkeley Heights,  Shapiro serves as vice president of the Suburban Chamber of Commerce, and a board member of the Madison Chamber of Commerce, the New Jersey Jewish News and the New Providence Business and Professional Association.

The Hale Series is financed through grants from the Anne and Lee Hale Fund and the Thomas Glasser Foundation, and is hosted by the Friends of Westfield Memorial Library.

The series was established by Lee Hale in memory of his wife, Anne, who died in 2007. When Mr. Hale passed away in 2013, the series was renamed to honor both of them. Their daughter, Barbara Hale, is a member of the Series committee.
