WESTFIELD, NJ — Artists from the Metropolitan Opera and more will perform in the New Jersey Festival Orchestra’s upcoming presentation of Verdi’s classic Italian opera “La Traviata.”

The opera, described by the NJFO as a “powerful romantic drama,” will be held at the Westfield Presbyterian church on Saturday, March 4 at 7 p.m., with a second performance on Sunday, Mar. 5, at 3 p.m. at Drew University in Madison. Although it is sung in Italian, there will be English supertitles to translate.

“The audience can expect a roaring good time,” Maestro David Wroe said. “They will be exposed to superb professional singers who have performed this opera with many opera houses in both American and Europe.”

The singers include Metropolitan Opera stars Jessica Sandige and Louis Otey. Cody Austin, a member of the Three Holiday Tenors, which performed with the NJFO in December, will also star.

“We are thrilled to be joined by these fabulous singers,” Wroe said. “With their outstanding technique and artist interpretation of this, Verdi’s most loved and most poignant work, I predict that there will not be a dry eye in the house.”

Additionally, Wroe promises a modern twist on the classic, which he attributes to stage director Maria Todaro.

“Maria brings the story up to 2017 and uses clever lighting techniques to create mood, drama and intimacy,” Wroe said. “The staging will bring the story up to date and be visually exciting with costumes and props.”

The opera is presented in conjunction with Ray Catena of Union. It has been made possible through additional  support of the DeAlessandro family in memory of Joseph T. DeAlessandro, Marty Jeivens, the NJ State Council on the Arts and the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation.

There will be a free pre-concert lecture in Westfield given by Michael Rosin at 6 p.m.

Tickets are available online at www.njfestivalorchestra.orgTickets may also be purchased by calling the box office at 908-232-9400.
