The New Providence Reds defeated the Kenilworth Astros 10-5 last Sunday at Snyder Field in Berkeley Heights to advance in the New Jersey Amateur Baseball League Playoffs.
The Reds were led by timely offense which included a seven run 6th inning to take the lead from the Astros putting the game out of reach.
In the 6th, with the Reds down by one run, pinch hitter Joe Lenz drove home Ariel Melendez with a single to tie the game at three. Later in the inning, Matt Nesto put the Reds up for good with an RBI single. Following a Tom Pavero walk, Joe Randazzo smacked a bases loaded triple to make the game 7-3 putting the Reds up to stay.
Nick Sommo added three hits and an RBI for the Reds, while Matt Nesto, Ray Nesto and Scott Horowitz picked up two hits each to pace the 13-hit Reds attack.
On the mound Harry Cohen got the start tossing six strong innings while allowing three runs and striking out six to pick up his first win of the playoffs. Cohen, junior pitcher at Drew University in Madison where he finished the season with a 1.08 ERA, scattered eight hits. Scott Horowitz and Billy Holden combined to pitch the last three innings to preserve the Reds win.
The Reds now advance in the double elimination playoff format to face the Montclair Bulldogs this Saturday at Woodman Field in Montclair with a first pitch scheduled for 9am. A win and the Reds would advance in the playoffs with a game on Sunday.
The Reds are managed by Matt Sommo and Sal Nesto, both of New Providence and both former coaches on the college level. This season, the Reds are once again sponsored by Orangetheory Fitness and Sport Clips, both in the Village Shopping Center in New Providence.
