Registration Open For Twilight Challenge 5K and Fun Race to Discourage Underage Drinking

BERNARDS TWP., NJ - Registration is now open for the township's 29th Annual Pleasant Valley Twilight Challenge, with a 5K, a one-mile health walk, a children's Lollipop Loop and live music at the community event scheduled for Sunday evening on June 4 at Pleasant Valley Park in Basking Ridge.

The event, co-sponsored by the Bernards Township Health Department and the Bernards Township Municipal Alliance Against Substance Abuse, also raises funds that will go toward supporting initiatives to reduce and prevent underage drinking in the community,

The 5K race begins at 6 p.m., following a one-mile health walk scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Kids can also partake in a children’s Lollipop Loop at the conclusion of the 5K.

Registration is live online now at, or on the Bernards Township municipal alliance website. Paper registrations can be picked up at Charter Day, scheduled for May 20 in downtown Basking Ridge, or at the Bernards Township Health Department, 262 S. Finley Ave. in Basking Ridge. 

The Twilight Challenge has been a staple in the community for 29 years now, said Community Program Coordinator, Kaitlin Kordusky.     

"It’s a fun evening for all families with local band Mama’s Stew providing live entertainment starting at 4 p.m. and a variety of events to pick from," Kordusky said. "We are hoping to have amazing weather, lots of runners, and even more support to prevent underage drinking in Bernards Township.”

The 5K race on trails at the wooded park, located off Valley Road, will include two cross country loops around the park. Pre–registration for the 5K is $25 if received by Friday, June 2; the fee on race day is $30. All runners must pick up their numbers on race day between 4:30 and 5:45 p.m.

Children welcome to join free Lollipop Loop on race day

Walkers can register for the $15 one-mile walk in advance or the day of the event. The Lollipop Loop for children will begin at around 6:45 at the conclusion of the 5K race. Children of all ages are welcome to join in the fun.

Prizes will be given to the top overall male and female runners in each age group in five-year increments from 10 and under to 80 and older. Awards take place at 7 pm. Swag bags will be filled with giveaways from the Municipal Alliance and other local businesses and will be distributed to participants, as well as a race t-shirt.

This year, the Alliance is proud to offer timing with chipped timing and markers at the 1-mile, 2-mile, and 3-mile marks. Timing will be provided by NJ Races.

The fundraiser also includes including sending Ridge High School students to the Lindsey Meyer Teen Institute to come up with ideas for how to discourage substance abuse for teens.
