BRIDGEWATER, NJ -- The Ridge baseball team will be going for its first Somerset County Tournament championship since 2011 when the fifth-seeded Red Devils meet second-seeded Immaculata in the final Friday at 7 p.m. at TD Bank Ballpark.
Senior left-hander Cooper Bobowicz has allowed one earned run in 46 innings for Ridge this season, which figures to a 0.15 earned-run average. At 8-0, Bobowicz, who is not planning to play baseball beyond high school, has taken his place in the rarified air of the best senior left-handers in the state along with Danny Wilkinson of Scotch Plains-Fanwood, Joey DeChiaro of Hunterdon Central, Ryan Ramsey of Pascack Hills and Jacob Ciccone of South Brunswick, among others. Bobowicz has 56 strikeouts and has allowed eight walks.
In a regular-season meeting with Immaculata last month, Bobowicz combined with right-hander Jack Love to shut out the Spartans, 4-0. Love, who himself is having a sparkling season with a 0.75 ERA to go with a 3-3 record, is also a big-time batting threat from the left side. He is batting .395 with six extra-base hits and 13 RBI.
Freshman first baseman Jayden Hylton has caught fire and has his batting average up to a team-high .418. Third baseman Brendan Bell, a .333 hitter, leads Ridge with 15 runs scored.
The Red Devils have nine home runs as a team, and those nine homers have come off the bats of six different hitters. Hylton, Love and center fielder Bobby Parisi have two home runs apiece.
Before 2011, Ridge's last county championship came 30 years ago this month, and current Ridge head coach Tom Blackwell was a member of that 1989 team.
